The idea behind saving a Vue rock (or plant) as a vob for use in an ecosystem is that you can then assign your own materials. If you simply pick rocks and plants directly from the eco list, you're stuck with the pre-assigned materials. And yep, I also read that even if a vob, ecosystem will still know it's a Vue rock or plant and create variations, but with your own materials. Really cool feature!
