Editorial Note -
Fireplaces were built in the center of a house so that the house would have "central" heating; maximizing the amount of heat that stayed inside the house and radiated in all directions.
A fireplace built on the outside wall of a house will lose some of it's heat to the outside and would not be as efficient.
