Thanks - I look forward to experimenting with these ideas later. *This looks to solve this problem 'internally' with nodes instead of faking it with other lights.* On a related theme here... not sure if this is the sort of fake you're referring to... but what I've been doing hitherto to enable spectacular reflection when using a single IBL, has been to add another light - infinite is fine - and setting its diffuse channel to black, so that it only has a spectacular effect.
