I like. :) The one thing about IBL that has bothered me is the 'ambient' quality. HDRI, having luminance information, can produce highlights by virtue of this alone. IBL, alternatively, is only feeding color variances into the lighting without accounting for luminosity strength. This is why I've been using other lights to compensate - to create highlights and stronger luminosity identity. This looks to solve this problem 'internally' with nodes instead of faking it with other lights. Well done!

Yes this works nicely. The how 2 was to show a way to get highlights with just the one light, but with a 2nd or more lights you can get even more control. Cath has a great tuttorial showing this technique even better. at the thread link. Keep an eye out for her posts as they are a wealth of info. These are excellent techniques yelocloud - thanks for posting them. I've found that for human realism shots, there is no substitute for the specular anisotopic and blinn nodes, so I'm now just using a bunch of infinite lights to simulate IBL - that way you get great shadows and you get perfect specular. Stewer's poor-mans IBL is an excellent script for converting an IBL image into a Poser light set.

Another example with the highlight nodes, moved from the product showcase for those who missed it. You can see the before & after of the same 1 IBL render without the highlight nodes & then with them. Also, please check out the linked thread to Cath's latest tutorial here in the main fourm to learn about even more control of light & texture. The world is in our hands & hard drives my friends. OK, now I'm addicted. This is my first attempt and it was so much fun. I finally understand what HDRI is, IBL is, know more about lighting in general and am so grateful. I even understand the concept of specular lighting to get highlights in eyes, etc. Thanks face_off for the tip. Going to try the node trick for highlights next.I wanted to try something with weird colors to see what the effect of the light would be on her skin. And the shadows were a real surprise.
Well that is a super render. The reflection and shadows are great. Glad you like the technique.

Special Thanks to Mec4D for her wonderful new light set & inspiration & thanks to Olivier @ Runtime DNA for pointing out this wonderful trick. I liked it so much I thought I'd throw together a quick how 2, so you can add this to your toolkit. For more info on the math behind it (& for lots of great Poser 5 & 6 tips & tricks in the Material room), check out their fourms. And don't forget to use the search function for this fourm, lots of gold in these here hills. EnjoyMessage edited on: 05/18/2005 02:06
