This came up elsewhere today, and I believe that it may have to do with the colour of your diffuse channel. I wouldn't be able to answer directly here, because I have limited knowledge of how things work in Bryce, however, I'm going to move this thread to the Bryce forum, and someone there may have an answer for you.
