Try to use .obj whenever possible--it's the format Poser's most conmfortable with. If you need a converter, try the fre utility PoseRay. It's designed to export Poser scenes to POVRay for rendering but it can convert .3ds to .obj also and the .3ds support seems to be good, certainly better than Poser's.
