I agree with your comments, and I tried in post #32 to say something similar.
Some morphs for the feet (and more exacting animation) would needed.
The main thing I hoped to get across was the method for producing and using the displacement map.
I hope the single frame above from my animation shows, that by using a gradient matching the foot shape, that I'm on the right track.
