Intel 8086 was a good processor, but Motorola 68000 was much better.
80286 was a shit and with only 80386 become 32 bit as 68000 was from the begining.
With 80486 was very little improvement, only speed. The big jump was with Pentium I with a little improvement with Pentium II. Todays processor are almost the same Pentium with more speed, with the exception of AMD64 that did another jump.
For running applications there are several factors, CPU, Cache, RAM, BUS, Disk, motherboard and OS that affect the speed and one important factor is the operational system that can neutralise the higher speed of the processor.
