Get Rhino 3D. It is very easy to use and the learning process is quick and easy. Just work your way through a few tutorials and you will be creating all kinds of things you never thought of. Hair can be done at least a dozen different ways in Rhino depending on what you want. I think you can download a fully functional trial version that is good for like 30 days. I am unfamiliar with Lightwave, though I have heard it is the best thing since sliced bread unless you go for the big huge dollar programs like Maya etc... Ya sure you cant do it with lightwave? Rhino has a sizeable pricetag but nowhere near Lightwave.
