Like UVDan said we have 11 of the worlds deadliest snakes and some od the worlds deadliest spiders here. My advice to you is don't go putting anything on without checking inside it first, yes that includes clothing. Check you bed out before you go climbing into it at night, you may have a snake curled up in there. Main thing is enjoy yourself while you are over here, though i can't work out why the hell you would want to visit Melbourne :) While traveling around Melbourne make sure you carry a change of clothing for all the seasons. Melbourne gets 4 seasons in one day ;)
