Edit-Transform-Warp is worth looking into - improves upon Transform-Distort by a wide margin (although distort is still very useful for quadrilateral selections)

The layers palette behavior has changed a lot though (this was between CS1 and CS2), especially with the ability to CTRL-Click layers to temporarily group them and with linking.

"Adobe Bridge" has taken over from the file browser and seems to be a little better at handling large directories (and is a separate app, which helps too)
