Congratulations on your son's birth. Pre-eclampsia can be pretty scary for new parents. Hope Mom is doing all right. At three weeks early, the testes aren't yet descended in many cases. This is not an abnormality. It will take care of itself usually. Your son is an excellent size, good color, and the listlessness at twenty four hours old or so, is pretty normal for full term newborns even. I know all the machinery is pretty daunting, but it's doing its job and the "not holding" part is just to be super careful about infections and tube placement for the respirator. I also would not be too concerned about the weaning off the respirator part either...it's a little soon to expect him to be breathing on his own effectively if he needed to be on the respirator to begin with. He's a beautiful baby boy and he will hear and recognize your voice, even if you can't hold him yet. Tell him we are all thinking about how wonderful it will be when he's "out of the box" and into the world. All our prayers and good thoughts for you and your new son, Zane.
