Subject: Luvv1.5 and OBJ2Cob - can't get the textures or material in Truespace!?!?!

mandyyjobs ( ) posted Sun, 03 July 2005 at 6:16 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 12:00 AM

I don't know why it isn't working. I have created a character in Poser 5 (a poser 4 character). I have changed the material and exported it as a obj. Now in Luvv1.5, I am bring in the characters, but the materials are all gone! The character has an all black material. Any ideas? PS - I have the materials, textures and otherwise in the right directory but all is get is a black covered figure!

Coincidently, when I change the name of Casual Women Texture.tif to something else, it can't find it and my model comes out the right colour etc - except, the hair multiple colours and since obj doesn't separate parts like 3ds, I cannot select the hair to make it a different colour! I am really frustrated with this! I have gone over the luuv tutorials as well and the OBJ2COB seems to have the exact same problem : Poser 5 - figure is from poser 4 selection, no props and only hair added. Exported through obj and cannot get the textures or materials right.

One last question (hopefully!), how do I get chinese, african women in Poser 5? I was looking at the figures, and it seems like there is just arian Judy!

I don't know about Luv, I can tell what does Obj2Cob.
Truespace has severe limitations compared to Poser and has problems dealing with groups and has many restrictions about them. Truespace can import 3ds groups because each 3ds group is a separate entity something such as several Poser's obj packed in only one file. With Poser groups is different, one object can have several groups sharing their vertices and also can have overlaping groups what is incompatible with Truespace, in this case the software has to convert the groups and if done in an automaticaly way the software many time has to guess which were the original intention of the groups.
Due to this I've decided to kill all groups information in the Obj2Cob version 1, maybe the version 2 will have some groups conversion features.
Materials:
Obj2Cob preserves the material division, but the name of the material is destroyed because Truespace don't allow material names, only numbers. Each material name is converted to a number.
The material information (color, texture) is taken from the *.mtl file and not from the *.obj.
If the mtl file is not present together with the obj file, Obj2Cob cannot include the texture name and color in the Truespace material leaving only a default color without any texture.
Also Obj2Cob versin 1 doesn't include bump maps and don't remember in this moment if accept transparencies.

I don't know if Truespace handles tif textures, I have only tested with jpg. You can try converting the tif into jpg and with a text editor rename the tif extension to jpg etension in the mtl file.
The procedure that works without problems is:

  1. Create a folder
  2. Export the obj to this folder
  3. Copy all the textures used in this folder (look in the mtl file for all textures you need)
  4. Run Obj2Cob
  5. Load the cob file into Truespace.

For the problems with the hair I recomend you to export the body as an obj and the hair as another, convert both and load them into Truespace, maybe you have to translate the hair to be in the correct position.

Stupidity also evolves!

ok now the way to fix this problem- "the character has an all black material. Any ideas?" yup - run "fix bad geometery" it will correct the problem and the textures (which are there) will show up correctly. this problem shows up rarely, but is easy to fix. "Truespace has severe limitations compared to Poser and has problems dealing with groups and has many restrictions about them." erm No. incorrect. use "Decompose into Objects" to access a figures groups. I use trueSpace to poser to trueSpace all the time.. and I've NEVER run into what Kawecki is going on about.

Ok, thanks I will try that.

All black materials may be caused by lack of memory in trueSpace. If you have a lot of very high res textures, try reducing the texture image size.

If you load judy and in the face room use the ethnicity dial, you should be able to get non-caucasian faces for judy, then you can make your own maps or download maps for victoria 2 that are chinese, african etc and apply them to judy, they will work. Victoria 3 maps don`t work with judy, just to make that clear.

As far as I know, trueSpace can't handle .tif files, so if you have the .obj file and all the textures in the same folder, and you still have this problem, it's most likely because of the file format. Use .jpg, .bmp, or .tga instead of .tif.
