It is magnitudes easier in P5 or better yet P6. Those versions include a Face Room. You can use photos to create face inside Poser. Takes a bit of practice, but it IMO is quite worth it. You also get things like the Material, Hair, and Cloth Rooms. If you can, upgrade to P6. There are still some issues people are having with it, but it is by far the best version yet. If you stick with P4, you would be best off buying a character or two. Otherwise, you will need to use something like UVMapper (available on the side menu at Roy's Poser MAX Tutorials.) This is a bit complicated, and was extremely daunting to me when I first started out. Unless you have more patience than money to spare, go with P6. Hope this helps!
