I don't have any contacts or connections either. My website was built from the ground up and after years of work its finally paying off.
And as for the "good" job, that connection was right here in this forum (or was it the PFO? I don't remember, it's been awhile). A nice man from Northlight communications posted a message looking for a Poser artist for a project.
I just happened to respond with 3 or 4 other people and was lucky enough to get the work.
A few of my other jobs, I just went after myself. If I see a product or store that I think could use some better graphics, I send them some suggestions/sample work and see if they bite. And again, sometimes I get lucky.

there's TONS of work there for graphic artists, both 2D and 3D. Only catch is you have to bid on the work with other artists. A strong portfolio helps too.
