You may be surprised at what you can do in Poser. Look at Geep's house tutorial, it's what got me started. Don't forget UVmapper; as part of making a good model, rather than a use-once quickie, is making a useful UV map. I started with anim8or, and still tend to use it for tweaking a mesh. But Wings3D lets me do other stuff more easily.
