I use the Microsoft MPEG 4 codecs which you can find at http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=ASF_Codec They're fast and compact and the video quality is great. I've dumped files using this codec at a 1500 rate only and they've compressed to DV/DVD without any noticable loss. There are also some lossless codecs that are great too - check out this one at http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Alparysoft_Lossless_Video_Codec.
