the ability to hit [ctrl]+click on the layer to make a selection was lost It's still there. This one caught me out, too, though, so don't feel bad. You need to click in the layer palatte directly on the actual layer part, to the far left. You used to be able to click anywhere on the layer in the palatte, but now it has to be much more precise.
