The only way one can defend the claim that "the best program will eventually win" is to define "best" as "the one that wins." And "best" and "most popular" are night and day. Witness the way the whole computer planet is harnessed to Windows, even though we all hate the bloody stuff, and Macs and UNIX offer better alternatives. And, for the matter, witness the VHS/Beta battle, in which "best" was destroyed by marketing.
