Rod, As Jeff says, its better to use .obj for the transfer - textures can be applied in MAX, but there are still some seams issues, even then. By far the best bet is to get MAXPose, by Konan. Its just released in version 2, and it rocks!! All textures, bumps AND transmaps are auto applied as from Poser, with no problems at all.
