Have you looked into 3D controlers like the SpaceBall? It works well with C4D, and reduces a lot of the abuse on your mouse arm. The biggest drawback to 3D controlers is that not all 3D applications are supported. and most of the "low end" and specialized applications are not supported (i.e. Wings3D, Anim8tor, Silo, Hexagon, Amapi, TrueSpace, Vue Esprit, etc.).

All versions of C4D from 6 up have support for the spaceball and spacemouse.
