'but I know no English speaking person who is able to pronounce the AN part correctly' Oh, I can. I took french and german at school and scots find french pronunciation quite easy. I had no problems with french, although to be honest, I prefer italian. After 20 years here, I'm pretty fluent. The people where I live speak an italian-french patois, and I watch swiss-french TV, so I keep it up a little, but not as much as I'd like. Fr-awn-swah would be the nearest I could get in type, but it misses the rrrr sound. mac PS Most people don't know a cedilla or a circumflex from a bar of soap, unfortunately.
