Subject: Extend Hexagon Demo

I have been so busy lately and did not spend enough time with Hexagon. Is there a way to extend the demo?

Yes from my knowledgement with Hexagon I still hate it. I feel that I need to spend some more time to get familiar with it.

GWEb If you send Eovia $169.00 (assuming you own a legit copy of Carrara4, otherwise it'll cost ya $249.00) they'll be glad to extend your demo indefinately.

I understand GWeb's question. I dismissed Hexagon immediately when I saw that it didn't have edge creasing (never mind edge weighting). And my demo expired. But I never really got to try out the workflow, and I wonder whether I might have liked it in general. GWeb, you should contact Eovia. Maybe they can extend your demo. I've done that with other software.

Gweb. email Eovia I'm sure they will help you out. By the way Bob Stockewell has stated that they have no plans to bundle Hexagon with Carrara. So if you are waiting for C5 to have Hexagon bundle. It may not happen. But please do contact eovia tech support they will help you out.

GWeb,
When you create the half, you click on the Symmetry button. This will allow you to create a symmetrical duplicate of the object by plane, but don't stop there. You need to go to the properties panel and click the "Clone Off" button to turn on cloning (it will switch to "Clone"). This will allow the duplicate to be a clone and any changes done to the original will be reflected in the clone. Click the plane of symmetry and you're done!

I've noticed that if I try to scale or move the whole object the clone does not follow or update... any ideas why, or is mine just being flakey?

GWeb, Additionally, on an object that is not cloned, if you select multiple vetexes or facets using the shift-click method, they all transform identically when modified. (the Hexagon tutorial shows horns being extruded symmetrically by selecting multiple points on a creatures head if you can reference that) cckens, I guess the best way to describe a clone in hexagon would be "instances of an original". Each instance can be moved and scaled separately but will mimic the geometry changes. Simply grouping multiple instances will allow them to scale and move together.

Shift key !!! I am using tablet and dont like to use shift key on every polygon I want to select. I like the symmerical function in ZBrush alot but the ZSphere is not reliable because it have some problem with metaball and rig system. So for Carrara I have better symmeterical idea. I have posted it in other thread. Link provided above.

GWeb, I owe you a small appologie for my flip answer to your question above. However, every post I've seen you make on this list has made it clear that you don't like either Carrara or Eovia very much and now it seems you've found yet something more to complain about. Why do you subject your self, not to mention those of us that do like the program and the company, to your constant complaints? If you don't like Eovia and it's products, just don't bother with it, there are a lot of other 3D softwares avaiable, One of them has to have all (or at least, most) of the features you want. Then, at least you'd be happy. I do not mean this as an attack, and I won't aparticipate in any "flame war" over the subject. I simply can't understand why someone that is as unhappy with a product and company, as your posts make me believe you are, would continue to suffer with it. mike

No trav, you took it the wrong way. You should think before you speak that I am entitled to like Carrara on some of its features. Carrara may have its limitations and would like to input some ideas to push it to upper limit. So, I really can't do much modeling with the current version of VM on some of my projects and it is disappointing. I am entitled to this opinion and imply to support my wish list for Eovia team to improve things in VM. Hexagon is released and Eovia recommends for some of us to use it. I thought I should try Hexagon and keep my mind open to see if I can do more modeling than VM. I am entitled to try it.

Mark, as I said, I don't mean this as an attack. GWeb, perhaps I have taken it wrong. If so I again owe you an appologie, and here and now tender it. It just appears to me, and I believe that I'm not the only one, that all of your posts generally evolve into a slam on Eoiva and/or Carrara. I would suggest that many of us would be more receptive and sympathetic if your were a bit less negative in every thread. For one thing I see you asking about symetrical modeling. While not exactly what yo are asking for (which is a very interesting and useful tool, by the way), I work around this by modeling every thin in half, either horizontally or vertically then, once satisfied with the half model, I use "duplicate with symmetry" to copy it. In some cases I even model in quarters and duplicate both vertically and horisonatally. A bit bulkier that having a tool specific for the job but then again, many of my models become so busy that a tool tha reproduced this symmetry effect immediately on the screen could also become very distracting. Also I think, from my try with the hexagon demo that I do a technique similar using the dynamic extrusion tool and subdivison to create "organic" modeling. It's not as smooth, not as intuative but it serves my purpose for now, which is why I passed on purchasing yet another modeler. mike

I am aware with duplicate tool. It is always helpful to have symmeterical modeling in realtime. Seeing half of a model while modeling is a very annoyed, it is hard to determine if it looks right. What I suggested in my wish list to intergate symmeterical pointer with database system to memorize which polygon corners is made with symmeterical as a group. So that way I do not have to change symmeterical value everytime and may change by itself when mouse is on a specific polygon or corner. It is workable for any form of models especially disorted model. Now you see why I put some efforts to impress my wishlist for next version.

GWeb, have you tried modeling in Amapi 7? It is a very good vertex modeler and Hexagon allows for better organic modeling.

Personnally what I would find more helpful is the ability to save a morphed figure in it's morphed shape. Or to UVMap it in a morphed shape. This would allow us to flatten a figure for mapping then return it to it's desire shape, similar to what I've seen done in 3D studio max. But that's another story. mike

About the extension of the demo version of Hexagon, you can email the european tech support (europe_support(at)eovia.com) and request it. You will have a new serial number, for 15 extra days if I'm not wrong (but no more extra time extension after this one). By the way, it's actually holidays in france, and I know that the tech support won't answer these request until friday 18th Thomas http://www.eovia3d.net

Well, that makes your purchasing decision easier. No, you won't buy it. This reminds me of something amazing I experienced years ago. There was a 3D program... I forgot the name, but it worked with RenderMan, and there was no demo available. You had to buy it. And if you didn't like it, you could NOT return it. And it was like $400. No smart person would accept that deal, and no one did. The product and the company are gone. Eovia isn't THAT dumb, but apparently they're not overly smart either.
