Holding out for the DVD collector's edition of Star Wars Holiday Special .... It'll never happen. :( Lucas has basically disowned The Holiday Special... and strangely, The Ewok Adventure movies are on DVD... hmm... Anyway, the Holiday Special aired in November, 1978, which means it was shot during the height of Star Wars excitement... and probably a few weeks or months before shooting began on Empire Strikes Back. At the time, musical variety shows were popular, so why not make on based on Star Wars? I suppose it seemed like a good idea at the time. Or maybe Lucas was trying some new marketing ideas. What did you miss in The Holiday Special? - Luke giving a speech via a video monitor. If you look real close, you can see the thick layers of makeup- the Holiday Special was shot right after Mark Hamill had a bad car accident and his face got torn up. So, yes, those wounds on Luke's face in Empire Strikes Back are real... though they weren't actually made by the Wampa.
