I might also add that you may be able to use the "shadows only" render pass in P6 render options to help you if all else fails. It would be a little more laborious, but you could render the scene in layers without any shadows (very fast), then remove the heavy textures from the scene, turn on shadows again, and try a full pass using the "shadow only" render option. It won't alleviate all the heavy geometry, but it should allow you to finish the render without incident.
