Subject: Tutorial #1 - Carrara to Poser - The Very Basics

mapps ( ) posted Sat, 13 August 2005 at 8:59 PM ยท edited Wed, 11 December 2024 at 2:18 AM

This is the first of my tutorials for creating models in Carrara to be used in poser as the basis of a prop or figure. This is just the low res version (it's still 5 megs) the highres version and the supporting files will be bosted on Monday. The tutorail finished with adding textures that are supose to be with the file but are not there because they will be posted on Monday. But any square wood texture can be used or you can use Poser 5 or 6 materials if you are using P5 or 6. Other than that the tutorial is complete. It can be grabbed of my site using this link http://www.freewebs.com/mapps/downloadstutorial.htm or by pastingthis link into your browser. http://webzoom.freewebs.com/mapps/TUT%201%20Low%20Res.zip If you have any questions or comments post them here in this thread :-)

Mapps, -You DA MAN!!! Now I can truly use Carrara4 Std that I bought recently. I have been looking for tutorials, but most of what I found was for RDS version 0.00000005 circa 1982. I'm so glad that you have another tut in the works. -The Starkdog

The next tut will be a little more exciting :-) the first one is ment to get the basics out of the way. Each tut will focus on 1 main aspect of Carrara and Poser. With each one requiring you to know the general stuff from the one before. xantor you are welcome :-) I started with RayDream 1 and used RDS3 untill 2 years ago when I switched to Carrara 3, what a difference...lol Starkdog tut #4 or 5 will require the studio version (Vertex Modeler) and we will be making cloths for poser. First a dynamic item for poser 5 & 6 then the next tut a conform that can be used in any version of poser, it is easiest with poer 6 since it has some very powerful features in the setup room that are only in poser 6. But will cover 5 and pro too. Users will just be finished way ahead of the 5 and Pro uses. The Vertex Modeler is where I create all the stuff I make. I never use the other modelers anymore. A quick sum up of the tuts in progress 1-The very basics, using the Assembly room and making Carrara do all the work. 2-The Spline Modeler-and making it into a poseable character in poser. 3-The Metaball Modeler-And making it into a morphing character. 4-The vertex Modeler-Making it a Cloth Item in poser and making poser fit it to several different characters. 5-Mainly Poser-Taking our Cloth items and maing them into conforms. 6 and later, will be what ever is requested.

Hey Mapps, I also use Hexagon, and I can export as a *.car file, so I can bring it into Carrara. I was wondering if you can do a tutorial on UVMapping inside Carrara, as I am battling UVMapper, trying to map out clothes. I have a lot of overlapping meshes that I cannot flatten out. I think that it might be easier to map out in Carrara, but I'm not sure. Thanks, -The Starkdog

The only problem with mapping in carrara it is ignores scale...well Studio 3 ignores scale (my main prog, will upgrade to 4 this month if my car doesn't break down again). Take a standard 2x4 it is 4 inches by 2 inches by 6 feet. In Carrara it is 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet in the UV Map which causes major distortions in the texture. UV Mapper maps it as 2 inches by 6 inches by 6 feet. This is one of the reasons I am still using Mapper. Carrara does allow you to rotate the object 360 degrees and select the verts you want to map. You can also set mapping zones which UV Mapper will see as groups that can be selected and mapped. I use this to get into the little spots. So this part is good, I will have to wait till I get 4 to see if the distortion problem is fixed or not. I do promiss to cover Carrara Mapping in one of the later tuts, likely #4. Each tut will take about 25 hours to make so it will be a while before I get to 4. This into one too 16.5 hours to do. The Later tuts will also cover how to do more complex mapping in mapper to so this may also be of a help. This way you can combine using both.

Just noticed the line above in the promised tuts should read 4-The vertex Modeler-Making a Cloth Item FOR Poser and making Poser fit it to several different characters. not 4-The vertex Modeler-Making it a Cloth Item IN poser and making poser fit it to several different characters.
