You haven't said what version you are using. Anyway, you can go to the preferences and play with the display options to see what suits you and your system best. But maybe try to remember what the original settings were so that you can return if it is not as good as it is now. What i do a lot is to use wireframe displays for all windows but the camera one. Makes things faster. Then especially for large models, after i have positioned them i switch those to wireframe box mode. Yes, you can do that for each member of the scene individually. Makes things much faster too. Last but not least, i switch off the automatic scene preview option and do that manually when i need it. A big resource "eater" too.
