Hi Arend,In answer to your question - yes it is quite possible to create a one-layer image in UF with some appearance of "depth" to it - although most of the formulae available do not create a true 3D image (I agree with Keith that a program like Xenodream is best for this).
To do so requires careful manipulation of the chosen basic (.ufm) and coloring (.ucl) formulae, as well as the gradient. The one-layer image attached is one such - it uses a simple 3-point gradient, and includes 4 separate textures which are available within one coloring formula. It does not use any mapping or masking.
I think it is a valuable technical exercise to occasionally create such an image, but to me, personally, it still lacks the interest and artistry that develops with the addition of more layers and manipulation - I guess a bit like a painting which starts as a line drawing and ends up as something to hang above a fireplace which gives pleasure to view over a long period of time.
