What OS? Windows or MacOSX. What video card manufacturer? nVidia or ATI (or other). What settings? For Windows, best to use (checking) DualView (nVidia) and not 'span' or 'single display'. This gives you a single 'desktop' but with two 'desktop areas' so that desktop icons and taskbar don't stretch between them. Also disallow windows to span across monitors (unless you want to allow that behavior).

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.
