If you are looking for a free sound editor, try Audacity, which I am providing a link to. Audacity also accepts VST plugins. Cakewalk Pro Audio is feature rich, but is a program you have to shell out cash for. If you are good with programming, and musically literate, Fruity Loops is a good one to have. Slightly more pricey and more feature enriched to boot is Acid Pro. If you have a midi controller and need a software synth that is easy to use, then Simsynth is a good program.
