When I used the basic Shadow/Highlights function in Photo-shop CS, It really becomes noticeable! Just posting this example, so everyone SEES the issues!

Could be a few things going on here, depending on the brand/model of scanner and it's age. I would check your owners manual for general troubleshooting and call the manufacturer (if its still under warranty. Most have support hotlines that may assist in these situations. Also check their webiste as another resource.
