Subject: Anybody getting blank opengl renders?

ren_mem ( ) posted Sat, 22 October 2005 at 9:53 PM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 5:22 PM

I am on many things and others seem to be getting them also. These happen even with a basic model.3delight is ok. ati9600xt. Earlier versions I did not notice, but seems to be happening alot. I cannot find anything wrong... but wanted to make sure it is not user error before posting a bug. Haven't been using D|S long.

You need to download the latest drivers from ATI (http://www.ati.com/). The Microsoft drivers just don't cut it.

hmmm I get blank OpenGL renders too, with the latest ATI drivers, but only (IIRC) if there are no lights in the scene. 3Delight picks up the default lighting (which is actually no lights) correctly but OpenGL seems to demand a lightsource.

Didn't play with it too much though, and can be mistaken :)

I have a GeForce PCX 5750/PCI/SSE2 on my system and do not have this plank opengl render. I just wonder if you have your scene correct in DazStudio as this is also an opengl screen. Did you try to play with the render settings using the fast time render to see if things are changing? Jacques

Well the card is an ASUS so I have their fairly current feb 2005 ati drivers. Had zero issues. Will check on drivers tho. Changing drivers around w/o better info is not a good idea. ...it can easily introduce more issues. I did not notice this in beta and no other program is doing this (vue, carrara). Sorry, but I think this is a bug...wanted to know how many others were having same issues. I did play w/ render settings...trying to see a pattern. It acts like it is rendering then blank. When I do 3delight no problem, preview ok. Some scenes aren't doing it, but most are.

I remember playing with both camera and lights to see if this had an effect. Well I just went and checked. What my issue seems to be was that the fast render had gotten moved to "open gl use shader" instead of the default "opengl 8 passes per light." With no lights this seems to work fine now. Don't know how I missed that. Glad to see it.

Well, the renders don't look too real...realizing rendering limitations in D|S, altho it seems like others got better rendering out of it than I am. I went to advanced and set the opengl hardware option then use open gl shader 8 passes per light this changes the fast render option on the general page to use opengl shader which results in blank renders. I guess it was designed that way.

FWIW, ATI's OpenGL support is rather lacking. The later drivers have some improvement but they still have problems. As to comparing to Vue and Carrara, this is not a valid comparison as neither of those two programs make as extensive use of the more advanced features of OpenGL. Neither does Shade 7 or Poser 6 which I also have. If you are using drivers from last February then you are using really old drivers.

LoL...what opengl support do you think is lacking for rendering? C4 makes quite good use of opengl. What support do you think is missing? The renders in carrara are quite lovely. DAZ doesn't come close. I am trying to get better render out of D|S. I realize many features it doesn't have there, but trying to get the most of it. If we were playing games...might make a difference.

Online Now!

Most of those applications are doing software renders, equivalent to 3Delight, not hardware renders.

ren_mem ( ) posted Mon, 24 October 2005 at 3:46 PM

Well I don't know vue well enough yet(still have trial), but carrara has hardware opengl support(since v3)...has it's own sofware render too, of course, but there is a difference. But as far as I know they have only increased the hw support for opengl each time. Granted Carrara is due for an update soon so it is a bit older. But it has a nice renderer. Are we talking about 2.0 vs 1.x specs here? I know Poser has limits. The renders I get in D|S just look too cartoony... I don't see many support options so honestly, I am not sure of all the support of it's renderer...haven't seen much spec info. Didn't want to open a huge discussion, but unless there are bug fixes drivers don't usually make a diff and in this case...there has not been any new innovations to opengl like texturing etc... that would be changed in an update to a 9600 card. Not that I am aware of. Most of their video card driver fixes are for game gpfs and bugs. Just saying the idea to update things that work w/o specific reasons is not sound.

I think part of the problem I am seeing is with textures, shadowing and lighting. Need to play some more. But I am seeing things in D|S that don't look good. will try to post an example.Seems high res textures are more important. Especially since it appears to do little post processing.

Well, part of the issue was definitely having to manually set everything...some settings were throwing textures off. I have forced all settings for the card to high quality. This is also free low res v3, but I am having shadow problems. Have been playing with them too, but something is off. The edges of the figure are a little edgy too and things are a bit contrasty. So if there is something I am not setting...let me know.
