The term "chicano" originated in the decades prior to the creation of the Movimiento Estudiant Chicano de Aztl AFAIK, and it is not used in Puerto Rico or New York, etc. It's a neologism resulting from the elision of the term "mexicano" (Mexican), where some pronounce the x in the old Nahuatl way.
