If you want to see more relationship between Sony BMG and Microsoft you have the facts:

Sony protection is only for Windows XP and doesn't work with Mac or Linux.
You can argue that most of users use Windows, I agree but there are 10% or more that don't use Windows so why Sony has ignored those 10%?
The main source for piracy are the CDs from China and P2P, Sony decided to ignore them and only attack common legal users, so why ignore this 10%.
The copy protection scheme is something that RIAA has worked for a long time, they had time enough to release Windows, Mac and Linux versions.
The only explanation is that with Linux and Mac it cannot be done.
Now remain 90% of Windows users but the protection scheme doesn't work with Win98 or 95 too.
Users of Windows 95 are very few instead there are more users of Win98 than WinXP.
Why the Win95/98 users were ignored too? and there are not so few as 10% of Linux or Mac?
The answer again is, it cannot be done with Windows 95 or 98 users or in case to be possible cannot be done in the way as was done with XP.

• There is no way to hide files with Win95/98.
• Win95/98 has no CD drivers.

You can see that only with Windows XP Microsoft has created the means to Sony DRM or Microsoft DRM will be possible. And the last and definitive argument: Sony DMR CDs cannot be used with Apple's iPod but can be used with Microsoft's devices.
