Subject: Blue = purple? Can anyone help?

Beemer ( ) posted Thu, 17 November 2005 at 7:35 PM · edited Tue, 31 December 2024 at 7:30 PM

Does anyone have any ideas? When I open a file in Photoshop 7 with blue sky and blue water, it changes to purple sky and purple water. No there is nothing wrong with the monitor, I am running duel monitors that are calibrated just fine, the file opens fine in other programs, photo impressions, picture Project, image zone, etc. any file I open with Photoshop now, has a purple tint to it. This problem just started on this computer and I am running Photoshop 7 on two other computers and they work just fine. All of the color settings are set to their defaults, and I verified this by looking at the other Photoshop installations. I had recently installed the Microsoft color control panel Applet for Windows XP v 1.0, but I had also install this on the other computers without a problem. I uninstalled the applet anyways but it did not solve the problem. I had recently installed the P.I.M. (print image matching) plug-in for Photoshop and I was not sure if this was the problem, so I uninstalled that also and it did not solve the problem. If I go to the color settings and change: RGB from (sRGB IEC1966-2.1) to (monitor Samsung 21 Syncmaster), the color looks better but that would be treating the symptoms not solving the problem. Does anyone have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated Thanks Randy

You should put a picture in here with what you say is purple water. Let us have a look.

Definitely a color managment issue, not sure about the solution though.

Thanks for your offer to help, here is a digital picture that shows this new problem, I am running dual 21 inch flat-panel monitors, yes, I can drag the Photoshop application to either monitor and the purple problem is definitely with Photoshop. I also tried control/alt/shift while launching Photoshop to reset the preferences, that did not help the problem. Thanks to all that may have suggestions or ideas. Randy

I am wondering what graphics card you have.Did you set each monitor the same when you click on desktop properties. When I set up dual monitors I had to make sure both were set to max colours. How bout if you switch them around. I would say it is not anything wrong with your colour management, seeings how one is good. First I would unhook one monitor and see if the colour is ok using one only. Then hook up just the other and check that.

Thank you for your help. The video card is an ATI 9800 and as I mentioned above this is a new problem, it worked fine on this computer, with this video card, and configuration. I also stated above "I can drag the Photoshop application to either monitor and the purple problem definitely stays with Photoshop"

Does anyone know if there are any problems or conflicts with Microsoft's color control applet for Windows XP?

Has anyone had problems with PIM (print image matching) plug-in for Photoshop?

Or does anyone know of any problems of not being able to remove these completely from the computer with add/remove function in Windows XP?

I also tried a system restore, but that did not solve the problem.

Can anyone think of any other software or settings that may interfere with Photoshop's color?

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

Randy

Sorry then... But somewhere in here recently I was reading about something like this...I'll try to remember.

Attached Link: http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/321608.html

"Adobe Gamma installs with Adobe Photoshop. You can use it to calibrate your monitor at the system level and to create an ICC (International Color Consortium) profile that describes how your monitor reproduces color. Any application that uses ICC profiles can use this profile." More info at link!

This prog should be part of your computers startup and load automatically! (this is Windows XP)

Sounds to me as if your sRGB profile file has been corrupted by the windows applet.
Have you tried downloading a fresh ICC sRGB profile file from ICC web site.
There are 2 versions there with BPC and without. Windows uses the one with BPC.

I have to agree with Onslow. Something has happen to your profile or Do you have proof colors selected under the View menu? Since this only happens in PS, then it must be related to color management.

Thank you for the replies, these are some good ideas! I went to the system configuration utility, and I do not have the Adobe Gamma loader listed there. I went to the adobe.com support link, and I followed the directions up to the point where it was going to recalibrate my monitors, but the monitors are not the problem. While I was there however, I did download and reinstall the Adobe ICC profiles. It did not fix the problem. I went to the international color Consortium site at color.org and downloaded their ICC profiles, but they would not open. I searched the web@fileXT.com they confirmed that the file was from ICC but they did not explain what program to use to open it. Then I tried to open the file using Photoshop 7, it did not work. Then I uninstalled Photoshop 7 and reinstalled it using the add/remove function in Windows XP, and guess what? (That didn't work either) I keep a computer log of all the programs that I install and changes that I make, and the only other things that were done to the computer lately where: upgrade to Adobe Reader 7.0, and I bought a new Canon flatbed scanner and installed the photo studio 5.5 software that it came with. Thank you all for your help so far Randy

There is one other mysterious occurrence that has happened recently. The biometric fingerprint reader which is usually active after the computer is started and can be used to log on to Windows, will not start now until after I choose a user and enter a password. (I don't know if this may be showing a problem with Windows startup) (although this appears in the startup tab of the system's configuration utility with a check mark next to it) I have updated Windows, HP software, Norton antivirus, spy bot search and destroy, ad aware, Microsoft anti-spy ware and I have also done a scan with Trend Micro's House call. The system comes up clean for viruses, Trojans, worms, and spyware. Is there anything else I can try? R
