It MAY be that it's trying to use too much space. I have a similar problem with a piece of mapping software... when I try to export an unusually large bmp, it does the same thing... when I pare the data down a bit, I usually get a warning that it's too big... then I have to pare it down a LOT... this sounds a lot similar.
