Subject: How can I speed up the display of the Poser thumbnails?

Black_Star ( ) posted Wed, 21 December 2005 at 1:38 AM · edited Mon, 26 August 2024 at 8:51 AM

Hy there! I know there was a workaround that allowed the display of the thumbnails much faster in Poser.I have recently reinstalled Poser , so I have lost the modified file in the process , altough I have overwritten the older files over the newer. I know it was about editing an .xml or .ini file and the purpose was to prevent from loading some plug-ins related to some file formats of Quick Time. The method was quite known , but now I have found no way to find it.The link to the original post will be very helpfull , but if you remember how , post it again , please. Thank you in advance! Best regards!

The only thing I know of regarding the library is the library.xml file found in the pref folder in Poser. It's not visible there until you have opened poser first though, then the file is created. For poser 5 if you edit the 4th line down, you can increase the number of thumbnails viewed from 100 to up to 500 or 750 I think. I don't know anything about speeding up thumbnail viewing though. I think that depends wholely on your computer's ability.

No , not that.I know about it altough I never needed to edit it.I don't know why , but my Poser version displays the thumbnails , no matter if they are 100 or 500 without any tweaking... But what I am looking for is an article posted a long while ago in wich is explained how to edit the file so you will prevent the plug-ins from loading , that speeding up the display of your thumbnails. For example in a folder with 100 thumbnails did you noticed that it will take about 20 second until display , no matter the machine you have.

As I remember it was something only for Mac, I think deleting the "avi viewer or dll????" but not sure try a search with this.

I haven't noticed a delay in my thumbnails showing up.

That was Dizzi!Thank you very much. Acadia read the thread from the link provided by Dizzi.that should solve your problem...:) Thank you! Best regards!

But I don't have a problem with my library thumbnails :) I don't notice any "lag" in them showing. I looked at that linked thread, and it talks about something called "Quick Time". I don't know what that is.

Acadia, the lag occurs when switching folders in the Library window. By removing or renaming the file "ImageIO_Mac.mrw" to ImageIO_Mactemp.mrw you will notice that chamging folders will become visibly faster. It's not so much a lag in the images loading themselves as it's a long pause that Poser experiences when switching to new folders caused by this Mac plugin.

Ahhh! I have a PC not a MAC, so that's probably why I don't find a lag or delay in opening my library folders. The only delay I get is when I'm going from one runtime to another, and that's usually only when I'm accessing the runtime for the first time in that poser session. After I've accessed a runtime once, for the rest of that poser session it opens quite fast, but I've never had a delay or lag when going from folder to folder within a runtime.

Acadia, just for kicks, try renaming that file, and see if you notice a difference. This is applicable even for people on PCs, as the file is part of Poser's "legacy code" from when it was on the Mac. I'm on a PC, and renamed the file with P5, and noticed a marked increase when switching Runtimes.

Sure. Where do I find that file?

Runtime:ImageIOPlugins. Although note that you will lose the ability to save pictures in GIF or PICT format, but I don't suspect that's too big of an issue with most people.

You are referring from inside Poser, right? EDIT: Ok, I found the image and renamed it like suggested in an earlier post above. I don't notice a difference in speed when going from one runtime to another. It seems the same to me. Message edited on: 12/21/2005 05:36

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I thought I was the only one who suffered through 1 minute lag times switching between the library! This trick does seem to be dependent on the size of the runtime, and mine is over 30+ gigs! This trick replaces the hamster on the treadmill with a streamlined V8 engine! The reason for the lame plugin is the fact that gif and pict are protected proprietary file formats and they would have to pay licensing fees to incorporate the code into Poser. And with the sluggish nature of Poser with this code, I'm glad it's not. As much as gif has revolutionized the Web, it has no place in Poser as far as I'm concerned. If you need gif for the web, then you really should be using Adobe, Ulead, or other 3rd party programs to optimize and convert PNG files or the like anyway. Now I can spend that extra time tanning by the pool or grilling chicken instead! Thanks for this tip very much!!

If you have a small runtime, you may not notice a difference. If you have a large runtime, the difference will be amazing.

My largest runtime is only 3.3 gigs.
