From the display menu, down at the bottom where it says Preview Drawing, I switched from OpenGL to SreeD and BAM!: Instant Line-up. The background Movie filled the document window. I have no idea if this has any detrimental effects further down the pipeline but it certainly fixes the display issue in Preview. Pheuw!!
