As a moderator I look at all the images, and in Firefox always open in new tab. This way I remain on the gallery page and have the speed of new tabs for quick viewing. I have always done this, even before it was changed. I thihnk now the galleries are running real good, and am impressed. Wonders why the main image is clickable to go back to top though.
