They are used but not by very many, since such mice as the Diamondback are $60, and most consumer users just stick to regular clicking of menus or keyboard shortcuts for free.

You more see the operation of using multiple button devices in higher end apps where there are so many functions, used so much, and when you can spend thousands on software, you can usually afford special input devices.

BUT...you bring up a subject that, I agree, has not been touched on very much at all...in fact, I have a Wacom tablet that I wonder if I can program the ExpressKeys to work with Bryce...(never thought about it)
