Subject: Real city in Vue

A few days ago Ive found at Renderosity link to application called "OGLE: The OpenGLExtractor" - http://ogle.eyebeamresearch.org It took me whole day until I discovered how it works, anyway, this is my first result. It looks pretty ugly, but point is that its a REAL Manhattan, because model was extracted (I cant find better word) from Google Earth program. With some good textures, I think we could have really cool cities in Vue.

Ohhh, no, it wasnt my intention :). Anyway, I think this is more curiosity than really useful thing :) (in this state of development)

Very cool :)

I like what you have done but I can see now that this will be a thread that will be contraversity. Some are, as already have done in another thread will say it is stealing so I am very curious to see what they say when they see this image. I am curious how far this program goes and how advanced and refined it will become. :) Thanks for popsting some results from it. :)

Hmmm, I stole whole Manhattan :) Youre right, there can be again neverending discussion about copyright...I found it interesting from technical point of view

Anyone wanna buy the Brooklyn Bridge? Going cheap...

Elminster_ZK ( ) posted Sun, 05 February 2006 at 5:07 PM

I can't get it to work with GoogleEarth - what did you do? I tried doing what the readme said but I couldn't get it working... :(

Wow that looks spectacular deadhead! (you know me as a big fan of your Dreamy Landscapes btw!) Iloco - I expect the only controversy will come if the model data is used commerically or without permission of Google if the data owned by them, but I think deadhead was just demonstrating what can be done with the utility (which is fine imho) - rather than selling it to us >9o) I personally think the model looks impressive enough untextured too - look forward to seeing what else can be done with it. Kind regards

iloco ( ) posted Sun, 05 February 2006 at 8:18 PM

Trelawney I knew why he posted the image and know what will happen if its used as you say. I didn't imply deadhead was doing anything wrong. What I was suggesting is what if it were used in other ways. :) Guess you didn't understand what I meant. I can see where others may use it as a way to grab models that are now copyprotected and encrypted if it gets more refined.

This will come in handy getting my locked objects out of LOCKED status......

Trelawney ( ) posted Sun, 05 February 2006 at 8:52 PM

Nah - I knew where you were coming from only too well Iloco(I saw the other thread and wanted to stay well clear) - I just thought the example was very cool, but didn't want it to become a vehicle to springboard from that thread, but hey-ho too late >9op

Are there any tips you could give us from your 1-day ordeal to shorten our learning curve? They would be much appreciated.

I have google earth and am very curious about this BUT I am very hesitant to put dlls into my xp!!! hmmm I bet I could do the same thing with a SCREEN CAPTURE of a google view...then use it as a terrain picture... safer, maybe not as accurate..(therefore less copyright problems?)... but very interesting idea even for the google GRAND CANYON!! OOOH IDEAS! :)

Life Requires Assembly and we all know how THAT goes!

If I read the OGLE documentation correctly, a screen capture is not going to get the kind of information that is required to recreate the 3D information that Vue can use. I'm not sure how far you will get with a screen capture and a terrain picture, but I'm curious to compare the difference in techniques. What's exciting about OGLE is that it siphons off the information that Google Earth is sending to your computer and saves it for 3D use in Vue.

@deadhead Over at Bryce forum, we had a link to your upload of the OpenGL Ogle image and were very much hoping that you can shed some light on how this image was achieved.....ie a tutorial of sorts......I know you have done this in Vue, but it could also be done in Bryce, so any help would be extremely helpful. Thanks for your time :)........ Marc .

What exactly does this application do...??? I downloaded the two required files... GLIntercept 0.5 and OGLE Plugin... But I'm at wits end on how to install the app and what it actually does... Is this something like Photomodeller which makes 3D geometry from 2D images...???? I'm a network administrator and I'm used to fighting with software, but the readme on how to install and use this software is too vague for me...
