Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
You really should wait for Poser 8, it will finally have the create art button ;-) There are a number of lists in this forum, it mainly comes down to better animation features. I myself am very happy with Poser 6. Very stable, great rendering features, good interface improvements. I also like the new figures James & Jessi & Kids) and the improved material room. I always liked P4, never really got into p5 too much, but I do love P6.

P6 has too much junk (like Jessi, James, the kids and the toon characters) Its got a really awesome spot render feature which i love. Still miss some of the more simple things from the Pro Pack - like being able to easily change the materials without going into other "rooms"
Just enjoying the Vue.
:0)
Another vote for P6. It has all the features of P5 plus a lot of extras and some of the annoyances of P5 - and P4 for that matter - have been removed. Yes, it has its own little "characteristics" but IMO it's stable, reliable and relaitvely easy going.
Coppula eam se non posit acceptera jocularum.
I bought it online from efrontier, Anthony. Can't remember how much I paid, though. I upgraded from P5.

There seems to be definite noises about Poser 7 being due out this year, so it may be worth holding off for an introductory pricing situation. Go check the home website for upgrade pricing between P4 (or Poser Artist as it's now called) and P5 for Poser 6 and make a guesstimate about what the upgrade from P4 to P7 might be. I have P5 and P6 on my machine and I still mostly use P5 because I know where everything is - but I'm slowly getting orientated with P6 and will eventually swap over permanently. One thing is the "delete all lights" script in P6 - Poser 5 and 6 have a habit of not swapping lightsets correctly and leaving a mess of shadowlights and whatnot that you have to delete one by one when in P5. The Set-Up rooms are meant to be more stable also and as said above the spot-render option can be helpful in some situations (depending on how many textures and objects need to be loaded - it only quickens the actual rendering time by limiting the output to the selected area, not the actual loading of scene resources from my experience). There are two versions of the material room available in P6 - basic and advanced. Basic is the default one and it's not too hard to figure out without resorting to the manual. Hope that helps. Look forward to seeing what you do with it, your P4 creations are excellent. Cheers

Definite noises??? Noises for sure, but definite, reliable, anything from the source? "Where can I find what new features Poser 7 will have?" I seriously doubt you'll find it anywhere, it's all speculation, I don't think anyone close to the source has said anything about Poser 7's possible release this year and features included. There have been postings in this forum from official Poser people, but I doubt there would be a written-in-stone list of new features yet. I recall that there was mention of actual full code-rewrites on the table - Similar to what Bryce is going through. The old code has been so hacked and patched whith each new version that some bugs are impossible to correct without full-on rewrites. One of these issues is the accursed single-level undo, which is apparently impossible to change without serious re-writes. I think they mentioned addressing some memory leak issues, but it was outside my understanding of what goes on ynder the hood.
looks like they relised poser 6 is a disaster. disaster? compared to what. According to recent poles P6 is about 70% of the poser market. it has about 10 times as many users as P4. P5, now there is a disaster. as for rewriting...look at the signs. P6 included an external morph system (taking the place of inj?), P6 added material collections (taking the place of MAT poses?), P6SR2 included a rewritten library. Looks to me like they are preparing some systems for rewrite. Will it happen in one go (p7)? I doubt it. Maybe core parts, but i doubt we'll see the complete rewrite that so many are demanding. as for when....i pressed a reliable source who would only say that a release in the next couple of months was extremely unlikely. A release before the end of the year IS very likely. From that I would asses that they intend to make a release before the end of the year but will not commit to anything. Perhaps this is a sign of some major rewrites which they fear may break other parts so they are not going to commit to any schedule. Keep in mind, we are only 9 days into the second month of the year. There is a long way to go before the year ends.

What would you suggest for Anthony A to do re: upgrading? Stick it out with P4 until P7 (perhaps, maybe) comes out at the end of the year or go P6 now and watch out for an intro sale upgrade from P6 to P7? Thanks for doing the behind the scenes leg-work! The Rendo site crashed out on me before I could do a search for past P7 threads. Cheers
I would say upgrade. if nothing else he would get a head start on the learning curve that he will have upgrading to anything from p4. we also know p6 is stable for the vast majority of people. If p7 is any kind of rewrite it may be unstable at first...or it may go smoothe as silk. the only reason i can think of to wait would be if buying p6 would mean you wouldn't be able to afford to get p7 till long after it is released. then i would hold out.

I am using a PC several years old which is still working well; but it is too old for Poser 5 to run adequately well on it. If I yield to temptation and buy a new computer, should I buy Poser 6 or wait until Poser 7 comes?
Is there anywhere a list of suggestions that people want putting in Poser 7?
