I would not recommend making your own textures if you're a newbie. It takes a lot of time and skill. Probably most of us never learn to do it (or even try). Many of those who do make skin textures use special software that allows them to paint in 3d (seams are a huge headache otherwise).

If realism is your goal, you might consider buying one of Face_off's packages.
