I am trying to have a Poser figure sitting on a sofa that is part of a background jpg. As the sofa is down in the picture i try to use the translate bottom to lower the figure but it looks that I cannot go behond the floor. How can I get rid of the floor and be able to put my figure whatever place I want?

I'm not sure I understood your question. But if you mean the ground plane, you can get rid of it from the display menu... display/guides/ground plane - or something like that.
