as for versions not being backwards compatible that happens sooner or later with any software package, its the nature of the beast when certain features or fixes get implemented. as long as newer builds can open old stuff thats realy all thats important (and aslong as content creators stick with official builds and not beta builds), far better having your application evolve then not implementint fixes and features just to make sure that old builds can open sourcefiles from newer builds. in my humble opinion
