There is an excellent tutorial at Daz on how to work with the MFD. It helped me a great deal in understanding the dials and what they did and which ones to use.

EDIT: Something I learned along the way was to pose the dress BEFORE you apply a texture. After you have posed it and applied the texture, do a draft render to see what it looks like. Most times the texture you apply doesn't affect anything, but occasionally you might have to tweak the dress a bit. In that case you can turn off the transparency for that part of the dress in the material room. 0 = not transparent 1 = 100% transparent
