And even despite the 'rubber suits' in the Tom Baker years, I'd hardly call his acting atrocious or the scripts uninteresting. For a typical scifi 'cliff-hanger' (which always get dumped on for some reason - and quickly dumped it seems), it is one that has been around for over forty years. How many series in all can claim such a long run!
Admittedly, sometimes I watch the older series for the hokiness, sometimes for the story, sometimes for the fantasy. From time to time, personally, an episodic set has been better than most other scifi series out there.
You want hilarious, just watch "Knight Rider". Here they are plodding along with computers that barely compute (1+1) correctly and they have a car that not only has amazing sensors, but is artificially intelligent (when AI was still a far off pipedream - and still is). If one is to get past this, one must accept an implausible premise for the time (early 1980's) as well as Hasselhoff's horrific acting! ;)

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the
foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg
off.
