Yes, even through a dial-up, you can have problems. My husband and I got a cable modem last week, and in preperation for that, a week before, he downloaded and set up ZoneAlarm. And we got some pings on the computer through the dial-up connection, which was through EarthLink. Cable modems are just worse because as long as your computer is on the connection is on for a cracker to work his evil.
