I have seen more and more charges made against the users of GetRight and other file download tools that have been not only rude and discurtious, but also not altogether true. Some folks may not know this, but GetRight has the ability of being configured to limit the amount of files downloaded and/or the total baud rate simultaneously from any site. I have used this configuration set to two files per site since finding this configuration. However, I have yet to see a website mention anything about a limit on downloading files. Saying that all visitors that use GetRight or one of the other programs are the ultimate culprits of the bandwidth woes and then stating that a fee will be charged for the future use of a website just because of these visitors is just plain sophistry on the part of any site owner. Many of these visitors have followed links that are plastered everywhere saying essentially "come and get it!!" It is NOT the fault of the visitors that you have created a popular site. If the site owner(s) deems to make money to pay for the site and extra bandwidth, that has nothing at all to do with the visitors choosing to download files and look at the site, and everything to do with site owners that have not set limits and then found the site has become unmanagable. Limits should be set on at least three things when even considering putting a website up, 1) The amount of time that can be spent on the website management, 2) the amount of money that can be spent on a monthly basis, and 3) the total amount of bandwidth that the site can reasonably sustain. If you plan a site and ask folks to come and download goodies, then turn around and slap them for it - I think it is time to take the whole thing offline until you re-evaluate what your site is really about, and who it is for. I will soon be posting a link of my own website to contribute my own small offerings for the enjoyment of all. I might even have a few select items for sale either on this site or elsewhere. I will endeavor to make the site as nice as possible and if I do set limits, they will be clearly posted for everyone to see. The main reason for my site will be my own enjoyment of sharing what I can to a community of folks that have shared with me so generously - hence I will welcome all visitors until such a time as I am incapable of doing more either finacially, physically, or emotionally.
