You might try this ...

Use the Group Edit Tool to group each separate object (and "Assign Material" if desired) ...

... then "Export" both objects checking the "Include Groups ..." option.

Next ... when you "Import" the object that you just exported, it will be a single object.

This is known as Dr Geep's "glue." ;=]
